Building and heritage permits

Apply for development, building, or occupancy permits. Heritage properties require Planning and Heritage Advisory Committee review before work begins.

Overview

Annapolis Royal has one of the highest concentrations of heritage buildings in Canada. The permit process reflects that responsibility.

Before you begin

  1. 1

Determine if your property is a registered heritage building (pre-1940 or Registry of Deeds registered).

  2. 2

For heritage properties, submit an application to the Planning and Heritage Advisory Committee before beginning any exterior work.

  3. 3

Apply for a development, building, or occupancy permit at Town Hall. Contact the Building Inspector for guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need heritage approval for re-shingling?

Minor work like re-shingling with matching materials does not require committee submission, though it is encouraged for HST rebate eligibility.

What materials are preferred for heritage buildings?

Wood, brick, and stone for exteriors. Wood for doors, storm doors, and garage doors. Wood shingles, shakes, or slate for roofing (asphalt is acceptable).
